Breasted Fountains

Throughout history, fountains have been a sign of ingenuity, engineering, wealth, and civic generosity. They also became an interesting site of sculptural exploration. One of the main questions for the artisans would be where the water spouts should lie. We often see dolphins and other sea creatures spitting water, but there are also many, many human figures doing the same--from various parts of the body. The famous Mannikin Pis in Brussels features a small boy, well, pissing it out. More commonly, we see females aiming their breasts and shooting water from the nipples. The Fontana Delle Tette of Treviso also served wine at times--red from one boob, white from another. A whole slew of women (or "virtues") do the same in Nuremberg's Tugendbrunnen. HERE is a slightly larger list, but with a bit of looking (yes, I'm saying you can go look at boobies), there are certainly more to be found.

People passing by or entering Ørestad High School will get a real surprise: a giant breast with milk progressively flowing out of the nipple is hung in the entrance hall. This immense (the balloon is 9 meters of diameter) and fascinating video-installation, called Venus of Willendorf, is the last creation of the Danish-Argentinean couple Venus of Willendorf, which is at once entertaining and deeply meaningful.

Something for the Memoirs

So circa 2010, little old me found myself hanging out with some fun ladies who were working at fashion week, then hanging out for drinks after at a swanky bar. We were all convinced to go to a members only club with another fashionister (that is the male version, right?). The whole place is black with various forms of lighting in different colors. And the only image anywhere was this:

Weird, right? But not just this. Pictured here is the first in a series of prints by William Hogarth, from 1732, called A Harlot's Progress. The series shows a woman descending into prostitution and eventually dying of venereal disease. On the wall of this club, though, was a GIANT DETAIL--blown up way beyond the original size of the engraving--of just the woman with her boob hanging out.

As a sidenote, the last in the series shows that the woman has syphilis according to the shading on her nose.

An Offering the Gods Can't Refuse

Here are some wacky Roman votive offerings to the god Asclepius asking him to heal them or as thanks for his help otherwise. It's kind of like "Dick in a Box," but without the box. Not recommended for use in other situations.
